Wood Species

WESTERN CABINET DOORS — WOOD SPECIES INFORMATION

Because Western Cabinet Doors manufactures cabinet doors from genuine hardwoods, natural variation is an expected part of the finished product. Grain pattern, color, mineral streaking, knots, figure, and other characteristics can vary from one door to another, even within the same order.

The information below is intended to help contractors, cabinet shops, builders, and other trade professionals understand what to expect when specifying each wood species.

SELECT ALDER

Select Alder is a premium hardwood valued for its warm, consistent appearance, fine grain, and excellent finishing characteristics. It is one of the most popular choices for stained cabinetry because it accepts stains evenly and can produce a rich, furniture-quality finish.

As a natural wood product, every Select Alder cabinet door is unique. Natural variations in grain pattern, texture, and color should be expected from one door to the next. While Select Alder is selected to minimize large knots and major defects, it may still contain occasional pin knots, mineral streaks, subtle color variation, and naturally occurring grain differences.

The amount and placement of these characteristics will vary depending on the lumber available at the time of manufacturing. Because each piece of lumber comes from a different tree, and potentially a different portion of the same tree, doors manufactured together may not have identical color or grain.

When stained, individual doors may appear lighter or darker, and certain grain patterns may become more or less pronounced. These variations are not manufacturing defects. They are natural characteristics of genuine hardwood.

The backs of cabinet doors are not considered furniture-grade surfaces and may display additional natural characteristics, including pin knots, mineral streaks, and grain variation.

KNOTTY ALDER

Knotty Alder is selected for its rustic character and natural beauty. It features warm brown tones, distinctive grain patterns, and naturally occurring knots that create an authentic, handcrafted appearance.

Every Knotty Alder cabinet door will have its own unique character. Contractors and customers should expect knots of varying sizes and quantities, mineral streaks, grain variation, color differences, pin knots, pitch pockets, sapwood, gum spots, and other naturally occurring wood characteristics.

No two doors will look exactly alike. Some doors may contain numerous large knots, while others may have fewer visible knots depending on the lumber available during production. Color can also vary considerably, ranging from light honey tones to deeper reddish-brown shades.

When stained, these natural differences often become even more noticeable, contributing to the rustic appearance that makes Knotty Alder desirable.

The backs of cabinet doors may contain additional natural wood characteristics and are not intended to match the appearance of the face.

SELECT CHERRY

Select Cherry is one of the most elegant North American hardwoods and is prized for its smooth grain, rich appearance, and ability to develop a beautiful natural patina over time.

Cherry naturally varies in color from light pinkish-tan to deep reddish-brown. Even within the same order, cabinet doors may display noticeable differences in color, grain pattern, and figure. Natural characteristics may include gum pockets, mineral streaks, pin knots, and subtle grain variations.

One of Cherry's most distinctive characteristics is its natural aging process. Exposure to sunlight and indoor lighting causes Cherry to darken over time, gradually developing the deep, rich color for which the species is known. Doors installed in different lighting conditions may age at different rates.

Because each board comes from a unique portion of the tree, no two cabinet doors will have identical grain or color. These differences are expected and contribute to the natural beauty of genuine Cherry cabinetry.

The backs of doors may display additional natural characteristics and are not considered furniture-grade surfaces.

SELECT HICKORY

Select Hickory is one of the hardest and most durable North American hardwoods. It is known for its bold grain patterns and dramatic natural color variation, creating a distinctive appearance that can feel both rustic and refined.

Unlike many hardwood species, Hickory naturally exhibits significant color differences, even within the same board. Colors may range from nearly white sapwood to golden tan, medium brown, and darker heartwood. As a result, cabinet doors manufactured for the same order can vary considerably in appearance.

Contractors and customers should expect natural mineral streaks, grain variation, pin knots, occasional color streaking, and other naturally occurring wood characteristics. While Select Hickory is selected to minimize large knots, natural color contrast remains one of the species' defining features.

When stained, the contrast between lighter and darker areas often becomes even more pronounced, making every door truly unique. The amount of variation depends entirely on the material available at the time of manufacturing.

The backs of cabinet doors may contain additional natural wood characteristics and are not considered furniture-grade surfaces.

KNOTTY HICKORY

Knotty Hickory combines the exceptional strength of Hickory with the rugged beauty of rustic hardwood. It is an excellent choice for projects where bold natural character and dramatic variation are desired.

Customers should expect prominent knots, grain variation, mineral streaks, pin knots, sapwood, heartwood color differences, bark inclusions, and other naturally occurring characteristics. Knot size, quantity, and placement will vary significantly from door to door.

Color variation is one of Knotty Hickory's defining features. Individual cabinet doors may contain shades ranging from creamy white to golden brown and dark chocolate, even within the same piece of wood. These dramatic differences create an authentic rustic appearance that cannot be duplicated with manufactured materials.

Each cabinet door will be unique, and no effort is made to match grain or color between individual doors.

The backs of doors may contain additional natural wood characteristics and are not intended to be furniture-grade surfaces.

SELECT RED OAK

Select Red Oak is a timeless hardwood recognized for its strength, durability, and distinctive open grain. Its prominent grain pattern makes it suitable for a wide variety of traditional and contemporary cabinetry projects.

As a natural wood product, Red Oak displays variations in grain, texture, and color. Customers should expect colors ranging from light tan to warm reddish-brown, along with characteristics such as mineral streaks, pin knots, ray fleck, and naturally occurring grain variation.

Although Select Red Oak is chosen to minimize larger defects, every cabinet door will have its own unique appearance. Grain patterns can vary dramatically, ranging from relatively straight and uniform grain to bold cathedral patterns.

When stained, Red Oak's open grain becomes more pronounced, adding depth and character while also highlighting natural color differences between individual doors.

The backs of cabinet doors may display additional natural characteristics and are not considered furniture-grade surfaces.

KNOTTY RED OAK

Knotty Red Oak combines the strength and distinctive grain of Red Oak with additional rustic character. It is selected for projects where a more natural and traditional hardwood appearance is desired.

Customers should expect visible knots, pin knots, grain variation, mineral streaks, sapwood, color differences, and naturally occurring imperfections. These characteristics contribute to the authentic appearance of the wood.

Every cabinet door will differ in both color and grain. Some doors may contain numerous knots, while others may display fewer depending on the lumber available during manufacturing. Color may vary from light tan to deeper reddish-brown, and staining will often emphasize these natural differences.

Each door is unique and contributes to the rustic beauty of genuine Knotty Red Oak cabinetry.

The backs of doors may include additional natural wood characteristics and are not considered furniture-grade surfaces.

WHITE OAK

White Oak is a premium hardwood known for its exceptional durability, refined grain, and timeless appearance. It has become one of the most sought-after species for high-end cabinetry because of its strength and natural elegance.

White Oak naturally ranges in color from light tan to medium brown and may contain olive or gray undertones. Every cabinet door will display its own unique combination of grain pattern, texture, and color. Natural characteristics can include mineral streaks, ray fleck, occasional pin knots, subtle color variation, and differences between heartwood and sapwood.

Depending on how the lumber is sawn, some doors may display relatively straight grain, while others may exhibit cathedral grain or distinctive ray fleck patterns. These natural features create depth and visual interest that cannot be replicated by engineered materials.

Even cabinet doors manufactured for the same order may vary noticeably in color and grain because every piece of lumber is unique. These differences may become even more visible after finishing and should be expected as part of authentic White Oak cabinetry.

The backs of cabinet doors are not considered furniture-grade surfaces and may contain additional natural characteristics, including pin knots and grain variation.

SELECT MAPLE

Select Maple is a premium hardwood prized for its smooth, fine grain and clean, contemporary appearance. Its subtle grain pattern makes it one of the most versatile species for both painted and stained cabinetry.

Although Select Maple is selected for its clean appearance, natural wood variation should still be expected. Cabinet doors may display colors ranging from creamy white to light golden tan, along with natural characteristics including mineral streaks, pin knots, bird's-eye figure, curly grain, and subtle grain variation.

Maple can absorb stain differently depending on grain density, which may result in individual doors finishing slightly lighter or darker than others. When applying medium to dark stain colors, the use of a wood conditioner or pre-stain treatment is recommended to help improve color consistency.

Every cabinet door will have its own natural character, and no two doors will have identical grain or color.

The backs of cabinet doors may contain additional natural wood characteristics and are not considered furniture-grade surfaces.

SELECT BEECH

Select Beech is a strong, fine-textured hardwood with a smooth surface and subtle grain. It is valued for its relatively uniform appearance and excellent machining characteristics, making it an attractive option for both stained and painted cabinetry.

As a natural hardwood, Beech exhibits variations in color and grain from one cabinet door to another. Customers should expect colors ranging from pale cream to light reddish-brown, along with characteristics including mineral streaks, pin knots, flecks, and naturally occurring grain variation.

Beech may also display subtle color changes between adjacent boards and can develop additional warmth as it ages. When stained, individual pieces may absorb finish differently due to natural differences in wood density, resulting in slight color variation throughout an order.

Each cabinet door is unique. Variations in grain and color are part of the authentic beauty of real hardwood cabinetry and are not considered manufacturing defects.

The backs of cabinet doors may display additional natural characteristics and are not intended to be furniture-grade surfaces.

PAINTABLE HARDWOOD WITH MDF CENTER PANEL

Paintable Hardwood with an MDF Center Panel is specifically designed for applications that will receive a painted finish.

Paintable hardwood stiles and rails provide strength and durability, while the MDF center panel provides a smooth, stable surface that minimizes the appearance of natural wood grain and helps reduce seasonal panel movement.

Because the frame is constructed from solid paintable hardwood, contractors and customers may notice minor natural wood characteristics prior to painting, including small pin knots, mineral streaks, subtle grain variation, and slight color differences. These characteristics are normal and are intended to be concealed beneath a quality paint finish.

The MDF center panel is engineered to provide a consistent, smooth surface free from natural wood grain, making it ideal for achieving a uniform painted appearance.

Because the paintable hardwood frame is still a natural wood product, grain pattern and minor wood characteristics can vary from door to door. These variations are expected and do not affect the quality or performance of the finished product.

Paint Grade doors are not recommended for stained or clear finishes. Natural color variation and wood characteristics in the hardwood frame will remain visible when a stain or clear finish is applied.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT NATURAL WOOD VARIATION

Western Cabinet Doors manufactures cabinet doors using genuine hardwood materials. Natural variation is an inherent characteristic of real wood and should be expected.

Within a single order, differences may occur in grain pattern, grain direction and figure, heartwood and sapwood, natural color, mineral streaking, pin knots and knots, wood density, stain absorption, and other naturally occurring characteristics. The amount and placement of these characteristics depend on the lumber available at the time of manufacturing.

Because no two pieces of natural hardwood are identical, Western Cabinet Doors cannot guarantee exact grain or color matching between individual cabinet doors.

Staining and clear finishing may increase the visibility of these differences. Natural variation does not indicate a manufacturing defect and is part of the authentic appearance of genuine hardwood cabinetry.

Unless otherwise specified, the backs of cabinet doors are not considered furniture-grade surfaces and may contain additional natural wood characteristics not present or as noticeable on the face of the door.
